New Initiatives

  1. the global ocean makes up the largest yet least studied habitat on earth, we aim to analyse and share recent research and initiatives in this crucial area

  2. key challenges include overfishing and biodiversity loss, climate change and ocean acidification, pollution resulting from shipping and deepsea-mining as well as from landbased activities

  3. the High Seas need strong advocates, better monitoring and a new governance structure

  4. campaigns that address specific challenges such as plastics in the oceans, protection of unique habitats such as deepsea mounts and vents and the major routes of marine mammals, prevention of bycatch etc are all key and need support

  5. large marine protected areas in the high seas can act as test beds for best practice in marine conservation and need to be given the scale and tools required for success
